Links and commentaries from across Micronesia.
The age of the internet has brought us many benefits, most especially the ability to receive updated and even evolving information coming out of far-away Micronesia. Not as far away anymore, just a click of a mouse or keyboard to read and stay informed on what is happening.
Here are some stories from across the region:
In Guam: New cases continue to emerge as the latest round of testing confirms 79 new cases out of 588 tests. With Guam as Micronesia's, specifically FSM's gateway via commercial airlines to the COVID-19 infected world, it's important to keep an eye on the developing COVID-19 situation there.
In the FSM: The Secretary of FSM's Department of Transportation, Communication and Infrastructure, Mr. Carlson Apis recently signed a contract with The Chinese Ambassador to the FSM to construct a new vessel for Yap State. The Chinese have repeatedly announced that their aim is to provide aid for infrastructure to the FSM, which includes roads, bridges, airplanes, and even ships. Many Micronesians are weary of this aid, of course, but as a sovereign nation, the FSM has every right to seek aid to improve the life of her people. As long as there are no strings attached, is what most people will say.
In Pohnpei, FSM: The Pohnpei State Government is mobilizing relief efforts for remote Kapingamarangi Atoll. According to an initial assessment made, they are experiencing an "exceptional drought" situation. Kapingamarangi is located over 400 miles away and is the farthest atoll in Pohnpei State. Crops and water supply are a major concern.
In Palau: Presidential elections are coming up. Two Presidential hopefuls gave the Palauan voters a glimpse into their minds. The first Presidential Forum for this election was held on October 15, 2020. Vice President Raynold Oilouch and Mr. Surangel Whipps Jr., answered questions from the Press. The era of Tommy Remengesau Jr., is coming to a close and it will be exciting who the next President of this tiny but very influential country, will be.
In the RMI: A music icon was remembered in the Marshall Islands Journal, Eddie Enos was described as a 'genius artist'. Marshallese music has always been very popular in Micronesia, and a lot of their musicians are known across the region. Local music is important to our people, so it's easy to see why the Marshallese paid tribute to the genius.
If you're wondering about Chuuk, Yap and Kosrae from the FSM, I am too. I'll share what I can find and hopefully provide links since most of their info is Facebook based on the web.
Wherever you are, have a safe and happy day.
